Too often, this sort of idea gets expressed as "I changed when I got tired of my own b.s." (I came across just those words yesterday, in fact), but Nin has it so much more right. Understanding self-change as something related to trust, risk, pain, and hope is far more accurate — as well as more loving, as well as less cruel — that seeing it as only a result of self-hating annoyance.
